Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism and strengthens the baptized with the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Through Confirmation, Catholics are sealed with the gift of the Spirit and are more firmly united to Christ and to His Church.

In this sacrament, the confirmed are empowered to live their faith boldly and to witness to Christ through their words and actions.

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses.”
— Acts 1:8

What Happens in Confirmation

During the celebration of Confirmation, the bishop (or a priest delegated by the bishop) lays hands on the candidate and anoints them with sacred chrism, saying:

“Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.”

This sacred sign marks the person with an indelible spiritual seal, signifying a lifelong belonging to Christ.

The Grace of Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation:

  • Deepens our baptismal life
  • Strengthens our bond with the Church
  • Increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit
  • Gives special strength to spread and defend the faith
  • Helps us live as mature and responsible Catholics

The Holy Spirit bestows His gifts—wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord—to guide the confirmed in Christian living.

Preparation for Confirmation

Proper preparation is required to receive Confirmation. Candidates are expected to:

  • Be baptized and in a state of grace
  • Receive catechetical instruction
  • Participate in the sacramental life of the Church
  • Choose a sponsor who is a practicing, confirmed Catholic

Youth and adults prepare for Confirmation through parish programs designed to foster faith, prayer, and service.

Called to Be Witnesses

Confirmation calls each person to take an active role in the life and mission of the Church. Strengthened by the Holy Spirit, the confirmed are sent forth to live the Gospel and serve others with courage and love.

“Fan into flame the gift of God that you have.”
— 2 Timothy 1:6
