Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based religious formation program for children that helps them grow in their relationship with Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Rooted in Scripture, liturgy, and the life of the Church, CGS invites children into a prayerful and hands-on experience of the Catholic faith.

Developed by Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi, CGS respects the spiritual capacity of the child and nurtures a deep, personal encounter with Christ.

“I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own and my own know me.”
— John 10:14

How CGS Works

CGS classes take place in a specially prepared space called the Atrium, designed to help children listen, reflect, and respond to God’s Word. Through Scripture, quiet prayer, and hands-on materials, children are guided to discover the mysteries of the faith at their own pace.

The catechist serves as a guide, helping the child enter into contemplation rather than providing lectures or memorization.

What Children Learn

Through Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, children:

  • Encounter Jesus as the Good Shepherd who loves and calls them by name
  • Grow in familiarity with Sacred Scripture
  • Develop a love for the Mass and liturgical seasons
  • Learn the language of prayer and silence
  • Grow in wonder, reverence, and joy in their faith

Age Levels

CGS is offered in age-appropriate levels:

  • Level I (Ages 3–6): Focus on the Good Shepherd, the Eucharist, and the joy of God’s love
  • Level II (Ages 6–9): Deepens understanding of Scripture, the Sacraments, and the moral life
  • Level III (Ages 9–12): Explores salvation history, the liturgy, and life in the Church

Preparation for the Sacraments

CGS supports children in preparing for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in a gentle, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate way, helping them understand these sacraments as encounters with God’s love and mercy.

A Partnership with Families

Parents are essential partners in their child’s faith formation. CGS encourages families to nurture prayer, faith, and participation in the life of the parish at home and at Mass.

“The child has the right to encounter God.”
